A Blogging Award

From my friend, Lynn over at http://www.lynnslifeonline.blogspot.com/. I've never won anything like this before and I'd like to thank my family, my friends, my loyal readers (both of you!) and Lynn for the nomination. (was that a great acceptance speech or what!)

Here are the rules: If you already have the award just accept and that's all you have to do.
1. You have to pick 5 blogs that you consider deserving of this award for their creativity, design, interesting material, and also contribute to the blogging community, no matter what language.
2. Each award has to have the name of the author and a link to his/her blog to be visited by everyone.
3. Each award winner has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that presented her/him with the award.
4. The award winner and one who has given the prize have to show the link http://arteypico.blogspot.com/ blog so everyone will know the origin of this award.
5. Show these rules.

Now I have to come up with 5. Let me think.

1)Charlene at Crazed Parent. http://www.crazedparent.org/ She's a mom, a writer, A Rick Springfield fan, and she's real. Read a couple of her posts and you'll see why I like her. She's also got a new gig over at Shine on Yahoo. Check her out there as well.
2)Paula at Paula's Place. http://www.paulafasciano.blogspot.com/. She's got a lot of stories to tell: about herself, her hubby and her two beautiful boys. Again, she's real. She's a Rick fan too!
3) Amy at How Many Lives http://howmanylives.blogspot.com/. She's a mom and a Rick fan as well (do you see a theme here.) She's also got a great web design business so if you're in the market, check out her links.
4) Andy at http://andymartello.blogspot.com/ Just some good, funny stuff.
5) I hate to toot my own horn, but I'm gonna do it anyway. Me at http://money-your-way.blogspot.com/ it's a blog I started to get information out there about direct selling companies. In this world of stay at home mom's and rising prices, I thought that some of this information might be handy for somebody.

Summer Fixer Upper

I've done a little tweaking and updating here at the blog. I'm a bit inspired by Lynn at lynnslifeoneline.blogspot.com, and if all is right in the world, you should see a link to the right for her blog. She's done a very nice facelift on her blog.

I've added a couple of things, deleted a couple of things, and will be adding a link to my new website soon. I've got a new story to share, and I didn't want to "blog" it, so it's going to get it's own page. This is along with the Summer soap that I've mentioned. That's coming along nicely too, and I have a first rough draft that will be posted this week.

Here's the summary. Boy- Chad, less popular friend, always seems to be the underdog, always "cleaning up" after his friend. This story is about Chad cleaning up one of the biggest messes and learning a lot about himself in the process.

What do you think? Interested?? I'll be looking forward to feedback.

Mamarazzi

I don't know if I've blogged this before, but I love this site. I can't realy describe it, but it's basically the paparazzi meets celebrity mom's meets blogging. Okay, that's not a great description. Do not go check it out if you are even a little bit easily offended. If you are a tough ol' bird like me....what are you waiting for?????

Update day

It's update day. I'm running a check of all the blogs and seeing what needs an update (all of them) The summer of truth blog will be going live in the next few days. Abbi and Derek's stories will be updated and I have a few photos for the other one.

Vacation was fantastic.

There's a picture of the view of "our" lake included in this blog. Weather was great but the water was cold. Fishing was okay overall. Lyric outfished Fisher 7 to 1 the only day she fished. Baby was in the lake everyday and the weather was only like 60 degrees. It was COOOOLLLLLDDDDDD. :-)

Okay, off to update some more blogs.

run one is done

Here's the flier, poster, promo information for Lyric's play. The first run was last week and boy, are we glad to be done with it. She did seven shows in 6 days. Of course, the day that they did 2 shows was very humid, hot, muggy, sticky, just icky. And did I mention the stage is outside?? The stage itself is actually air conditioned for the actors, but she said that she couldn't even feel it. It's a "World Premier" as this play is brand new. It was written by "The Mikes" who have been active in theater for YEARS.
Anyway, she has a bit of a break until July 6, which is great. School's out now, too. so she can have some down time. Sleep in. Do some chores around the house for me. (LOL)

opening night and closing the year

The school year is almost over. Three more days of school. Guess what the girls are doing?? A whole lot of nothing. Lockers were cleaned out last week. Desks were emptied. Lyric has had homework the past couple of days, but I'm not sure what class.

Tonight is preview night and tomorrow is Lyric's Starlight Debut. She's pretty blase about it. I'm excited for her. She's definitely not nervous, which is great. I'll be sure to let you know how she does. Since this is the first time this play hase been perfomed, I'm looking forward to seeing it. She said it's mostly told through songs (similar to Joseph and the Amazing Technocolor Dreamcoat) and there are like 50 songs. Good thing the girl likes to sing. LOL

Wow

Lynn's (at www.lynnslifeonline.blogspot.com ) got nothing on me. I haven't posted for 2 weeks. Considering school is done for me, I don't know what the problem is. Maybe it's just the let down from all that studying.

As you can see by the picture to the right, Rick Springfield has a new CD coming out this year. He was nice enough to play a couple of songs off that CD each night before the show in Milwaukee. I've already preordered my copy and you should too!

Sunday night started Lyric's daily rehearsals as her show starts performances next week. Nightly isn't so bad, for a couple of weeks, except they don't get done until 11....pm....and somebody (Fisher or I) have to go pick her up. I'm trying to keep track of what friends and family are going to come what nights and try to have somebody in the audience for her each night. I'm actually helping with concessions/product sales for at least 3 of the shows, so I'll be there, just not in the audience.

Strangers

Isn't it funny how strangers can quickly become friends? Or how we beat into our kids heads "don't talk to strangers" but "be nice"?? Thanks to Lucy Walsh and Rock the Cradle, one of my new favorite bands is Seceondhand Serenade. The kids bought me a CD of theirs for mother's day. (If you get a chance to check it out, Lucy did "Fall For You" on Rock the Cradle, and she did a super aweseome job.) Anyway, my second favorite song on the CD (so far) is called "Stranger". The words are very fitting for what I expect he was thinking about when he wrote the song, but I see a bit of a different meaning in the words. See below. I've highlighted the most meaningful parts.

Turn around, turn around and fire your eye in my direction
so there is a connection
I can't yeah, can't make a sound to somehow capture your attention
I'm staring at perfection
take a look at me so you can see
how beautiful you are
you call me a stranger
you say I'm a danger
but all thoughts are leaving you tonight
I'm broken and abandoned
you are an angel
making all my dreams come true tonight
I'm confident but I can't pretend I wasn't terrified to meet you
I knew you could see right through me
I saw my life flash right before my very eyes
and I knew jsut what we'd turn into
I was hoping that you could see
take a look at me so you can see
you call me a stranger
you say i'm a danger
but all these thoughts are leaving you tonight
I'm broken, abandoned
you are an angel
making all my dreams come true tonight.......

there's more, but it doesn't fit my "thought" as well as the beginning. this totally describes my feelings when I met Rick. I'm pretty sure that this is more of a love song. but those few lines are very powerful. I was a stranger to him. I was terrified. And I hope that he realizes how much his fans truly do appreciate him.

THANK YOU

Thank you. Two words. Eight letters. So much meaning. On Friday night, I was able to cross another thing off my "Lifetime To Do List". I met Rick Springfield. When I was turning away from him, I said "thank you". But how do you convey the fullness of the meaning with those two words. I was saying thank you for so many things.

Thank you for the photo. Thank you for the hug. Thank you for the autograph. Thank you for making the book. Thank you for performing. Thank you for entertaining. Thank you for being so nice. Thank you for sharing yourself with your fans. Thank you for being open, honest and funny. Thank you for taking time to do meet and greets. Thank you for coming to Milwaukee year after year. Thank you for loving what you do. Thank you for continuing to do it. Thank you for being the catalyst that brings people together and forms life long friendships. Thank you for being you.

Thank you, Rick, for everything. I hope that you realize how much you are appreciated. How much entertainment and fun you have brought to my life. Thank you for being the catalyst for so many wonderful memories. Thank you, Rick. thank you so much!

Rejected and accepted

A couple of months ago, Baby tried out for the Fine Art and Academic Academies in our school district. A month or so ago, we got the letters that she did not get in to either. This was heartbreaking news for us as well as her. She wanted to go there because Lyric did, and she has had some social issues, so she wanted to try something new.

Yesterday, we got a new letter. There is an opening in the Academic Academy if she wants it. YEAH! We're so excited. It will mean a new school and new friends, but a different experience from what Lyric did. (Lyric was in Fine Arts) It will hopefully be a positive change for her.

Okay, I'm off to Milwaukee now. I might come home tomorrow having met Rick Springfield. cross your fingers.

Today is....

The first day of FREAKFEST 2008. (Otherwise known as 5 Rick Springfield concerts in a row) To those heading to,arriving in, and partying around Milwaukee- I'm jealous. Only a little though. I try hard not to be too jealous, because I do believe that good things happen to me more often than bad things. I do believe that whinners get bad karma, and I try to see the good side of anything.

So, have fun in Milwaukee. I'll be there Friday. It will be fun. I'm looking forward to meeting some people I have only E-talked to, and reconnecting with those I have met in the past.

somebody save me a seat at the bar!

It's not broken....

Ah, the first xray (I almost took a picture of it on the computer screen) to prove that the finger is not broken. Well, actually it's not official yet. still waiting on the radiologist. But the treatment is the same either way, and it actually does feel much better. So, the splint came off today. But will go back on 2 times this week (gym days).

This weekend is Baby's birthday, and since she is about to be 9, I'm thinking she needs a new nickname. I'll try to use my creative brain...LOL.

All else is going well. School's almost done, Milwaukee week is almost here, and spring will come eventually. I think. Well, probably. Maybe?? :-)

Broken finger??

I think Baby may have broken her finger. She got it smashed in the car door last night. It's swollen. It's bruised. It's painful to the touch. Fisher thinks that maybe it's just bruised. I'm not so sure. But what do you do for a broken finger anyway? Well, document it of course. I'm going to take a picture of it. (bad mommy??!!!) She was already scheduled to see the Doctor tomorrow, so we'll add that to our laundry list of things to talk about. I'll post a pix if I can get a good one.

Big Huge Labs!

Sound kinda raunchy? Or maybe a dog breeding company?? Nope, it's a super cool digitial photo site. It is partnered with Flickr, which I haven't used much, but I'm thinking I might. www.Bighugelabs.com had lots of cool effects and such that you can do with your photos. You can then purchase them from Flickr or you can save to your computer and print yourself. I did a "Warhol" of my homework (pinworm) and it looks very cool. (see photo)

I'm going to make a magazine cover for Baby for her birthday decorations, and I'm going to try the photo book. I'll let you know how that turns out.

It's here...my 100th post

I thought about doing "100 things about me" or "100 of my favorite sayings" but that didn't seem to fit. So I just decided to do "100 words".

I started this blog for fun. It’s worked, most of the time. I enjoy it. There’s really no pressure. I don’t HAVE to blog, but if I want to, I can. It’s easy. It’s free. Sometimes, it’s even therapeutic. I can write about work, about the family, about my hobbies (Rick Springfield, reading, writing), about school, about my friends. I can write about anything. I don’t think that I have offended anybody yet. If I have, it was completely unintentional and I am very, very sorry. I’m hoping that this blog is around for a long time. Thank you. Me

So Much to Live For
Fans’ outpouring of support lifts spirits of sisters in cancer battleby Karen Rudolph Durrie(photo: Karen Pearson, left, and sister Kriste Ruhland get some Human Touch from Rick)Sisters have a special bond. They may share secrets, clothes and recipes, inside jokes, and even crushes on the same musician. But with sisters Karen Pearson and Kriste Ruhland, that bond was deepened by something they never dreamed they’d share: cancer. In August of 2005, Karen, now 50, was working at a bank in Washington, Illinois, living an active life riding and showing her beloved horses Valvikourrr, Doc and Boo, tending to a menagerie of animals including dogs and barn cats and enjoying life with Barry, her husband of 25 years. But for some time she’d been carrying around a worry — a lump in her left breast. She didn’t have time to be sick, she reasoned with herself, so maybe if she just denied the whole thing, it wouldn’t really be happening."I waited way too long," Karen says."Because I was worried about who was going do everything. I was working two jobs at the time, and had horses. I was praying every night for God to make it go away."She began to appear so ill that her best friend, Diane Bauman, waited in the bank’s parking lot one day to confront her, begging to take her to a doctor right there and then."She said ‘I know you are not feeling good, you don’t look good. You need to go, and I’m taking you right now.’ But I said I couldn’t now, that I would go Thursday on my afternoon off," Karen says."Diane was bawling, and she made me promise."The friends drove to Proctor Hospital in nearby Peoria that Thursday and headed to the emergency area — Karen was feeling very poorly by then.An X-ray showed masses in both breasts, and she was sent to admitting. The next day oncologist Dr. Paul Fishkin diagnosed breast cancer, and set her up to undergo numerous tests and scans.Karen was diagnosed with stage 4 bilateral breast cancer, which had already metastasized to her bones and liver.Five days later she started on IV chemotherapy, which she took for a full year.Shock to My SystemThat November, Dr. Fishkin told Karen that she’d only been a few weeks away from dying when she came into the hospital that August day.He told her that he could give her some months, maybe even some years to live, but that she was not curable. Treatable — but not curable. In October of 2006, Karen underwent a double mastectomy. Doctors, Kriste believes, did not originally want to put Karen through the surgery in 2005 because they did not foresee her surviving very long.Just a few months after the mastectomy, more cancer was discovered — lumps in her side near her ribs. Karen had 33 radiation treatments on her left side. Eight weeks after her last radiation treatment, another tumor was found in the chest wall on her right side below the ribs, and she underwent another 38 radiation treatments, which left her right side blistered and burned."I would never wish that on anybody. I had bleeding and blistering. I couldn’t wear shirts. I sat in the living room with the fan on and I didn’t go out. I wore my husband’s loose shirts," Karen says.In November, Karen had laparoscopic surgery to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.Since that time, Karen has continued with chemotherapy. She now takes an oral cocktail of pills — including Tykerb, a promising new drug that can significantly slow the growth of tumors in women battling breast cancer. Studies have shown the drug also offers a level of protection against breast cancer tumors spreading to the brain, and a shrinking effect on ones already present there. Twenty to thirty per cent of breast cancer patients will develop brain metastasis.Today, Karen takes oral chemo seven days on, seven days off, and takes a variety of other drugs to combat the effects of cancer and the side effects of treatment. Among those are Vicodin for pain, an antidepressant, and Ritalin, a central nervous system stimulant that helps combat fatigue and gives her some get up and go."For a while, I was so tired all the time, I would just sit and do nothing," Karen says. Now, she is able to sit on her garden swing — a gift from Barry — and enjoy her flower garden, care for her pets and do little things around the house. What she wants most of all is to spread the word to others about the importance of breast cancer screening and early intervention. She wants to get the message to women not to neglect themselves as she did, with devastating consequences."Women need to go for mammograms. Don’t be afraid to go. There are programs out there even if you’re under-insured or not insured at all. I had never had one myself. I would encourage all women to get one," she says. The National Cancer Institute recommends that all women age 40 and over should have a mammogram every one to two years, while women at a higher-than-average risk of breast cancer should talk to their physicians about having them earlier.Hole in my HeartFive months after Karen was diagnosed, she received a shocking phone call from her pregnant sister Kriste, now 41, who lives in Dallas."I will never forget when Kriste called me. I was hooked up to chemo, and she called from her cell phone saying ‘I just found a lump in my breast,’ and she was crying. I thought ‘it can’t be cancer, it must just be a cyst,’ but it was not the case. They (needle) aspirated it, and it came back with cancer. I was like, ‘I can’t believe this is happening to our family,’" Karen says.Kriste was carrying her second child when stage 2B breast cancer was diagnosed, and she had her left breast removed when she was 35 weeks pregnant.Son Grant was born healthy via c-section two weeks later, and another two weeks later, Kriste undertook a six-month course of chemotherapy."I was devastated, because she is so young and there she was pregnant with Grant, and sometimes I would pray to God, ‘If you are going to have to take either one of us, let it be me.’" Karen says."She has so much to live for with her kids, and I don’t have any kids. Just my animals are my kids. I tried to be strong for her and tried to help her with her questions," Karen says.Today, Kriste has a clean bill of health and continues to work for American Airlines. Third sister Kathie, 43, who also lives in Illinois, has been free of cancer, but is linked in with the family’s struggle to remain healthy.Alien VirusWith Karen and Kriste falling victim to breast cancer, Kriste’s doctor had her tested for the breast cancer gene. She came back positive for the mutated BRCA2 gene, which was traced back to the women’s father, who succumbed to cancer in 2004.Ironically their mother, who is still alive, had breast cancer at age 63, but she was not the gene carrier.Karen and Kathie also tested positive for the gene. Their brother tested negative.According to the National Cancer Institute, women carrying the gene mutation are up to seven times more likely to develop breast cancer, and have up to a 60 per cent chance of developing ovarian cancer. The carriers of this gene who are diagnosed with cancer in one breast have an 85 per cent chance of getting cancer in the other breast. And if already diagnosed with breast cancer, they have a 67 per cent chance of developing ovarian cancer. Many women facing such odds often opt to undergo prophylactic — or preventive — surgery to remove breasts, ovaries and fallopian tubes before any problems strike. While this may reduce the risk, it is not a guarantee against developing cancer, since not all at-risk tissues can be removed with surgery.Kathie, mother of three children, has undergone a preventive hysterectomy, but is struggling with whether to move forward with a prophylactic mastectomy, Karen says."My doctor has said there is a hormone drug she could take and could keep her breasts for another five years, so there is no hurry to take them off. But Kathie is like a health guru and doesn’t like the thought of putting something foreign into her body," Karen says."But they have told us it’s not if you get the cancer, it’s when. We don’t want her to go through what Kriste and I have gone through."Kriste’s and Kathie’s children will need to be tested for the gene once they reach 18.It’s Always SomethingOn the phone from her humble home, Karen’s pleasant, easygoing chatter in her typical Midwestern accent belies what she has to contend with on a daily basis.Only an occasional cough and apparent shortness of breath tip a caller off there may be something untoward going on.But there is more than that. With cancer in her bones and spine, Karen’s joints are sore and she is in pain daily. She can’t wait to get into bed at night to sleep, but dreads the mornings, when she is in the most pain. She takes pain medication first thing and waits a little bit before getting up.She gets hand-foot syndrome, a condition common to chemotherapy patients, where her hands and feet tingle and itch terribly and become inflamed and cracked. And she has lymphodema in her left arm, a common side effect from radiation, making it twice the size of her right arm.She has gained weight from the medications. She was bald from her initial chemo treatment, but hair has started to grow back darker and coarser. Her lungs are scarred from radiation and she is prone to fluid accumulation around then, so she coughs and feels short of breath.Even with that laundry list of ailments, she is simply not the complaining kind.Karen is thankful to still be here. She has hopes that she can get back to work and get back to riding her horses again — she hasn’t competed in dressage since 2004."I try to take each day as I can and do what I can. For as horrible as it’s been, it’s really just brought about some really neat things in my life. You appreciate everything even more. Family and friends and old classmates, and the cards I get — oh my gosh, I haven’t thrown a single one away."Human Touch (or... What’s Rick got to do with it?)So how does a handsome former (TV) doctor fit into this story? This part starts with Kriste, a longtime fan of Rick Springfield, the veteran musician who played suave, dark-haired Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital in the ‘80s— a role he’s since reprised sporadically over the last couple of years. In her line of work, Kriste is often treated to the sights of celebrities and occasionally assists them with travel arrangements. For the last decade, Kriste and her friend and co-worker Deanna have helped Rick and his band with details such as ensuring musical equipment gets on connecting flights, or by zipping them around the airport on golf carts to get them to their connecting gates. When Karen was diagnosed with cancer and her friend Diane was organizing a benefit to help with the medical bills, Kriste called up Rick’s tour manager to ask for a signed CD or photo to auction off at the benefit."They turned around and offered a signed guitar. Rick has a heart of gold, I swear. He is just the nicest man on this earth," Kriste says. The guitar was auctioned off on eBay instead to attract higher bids, and it garnered a $1,500 selling price. The successful bidders threw in an extra $500 donation as well, Karen says.Several weeks after the guitar was proffered, Kriste herself was diagnosed with breast cancer, and the sisters’ story was put up on Rick Springfield’s official website to encourage fans to make donations via Paypal to help the women with mounting medical bills. That year, the women were nominated to be the fundraising recipients for a fan charity drive that takes place annually during Springfield’s five-day concert series in Milwaukee. In what has evolved into an annual organized event, fans schedule outings, activities and a charitable event attended by concertgoers. Rick’s fans have helped a number of charitable organizations and individuals by holding luncheons, auctions, raffles and direct-donation campaigns."There are no words to describe how we felt when they decided to do the fundraiser for us," Kriste says.Karen and Kriste attended one concert during what Springfield himself has dubbed the Milwaukee "Freakfest" in May of 2006 — Karen covering her bald head by sporting a hat with a fake ponytail attached to it, and Kriste wearing a jaunty "Cancer Sucks" T-shirt."Rick made the comment in front of the fans that he agreed and what a great shirt," Kriste says. The women met with Rick during a pre-show soundcheck.Tour manager and all-around guru Ronnie Grinel had the girls sneak up on the band from the back of the stage while Rick and the band ran through a number."I remember Rick turned around and quit playing guitar and said ‘Oh my God,’ and gave Kriste and Deanna a big hug and a kiss, and then gave me a big hug and a kiss," Karen says."It was neat. He was so gracious — all the guys were. And we got to talk with them after that in the room where they chill out before the show, and then later we came back for the concert."Karen loved Rick since her high-school days when she used to watch him on General Hospital, and has always enjoyed his music. She counts his sexy hit Affair of the Heart as her favorite Springfield song. The funds raised by Rick’s fans in 2006 were a major boost — financially and spiritually — to Kriste and Karen. The money was deeply appreciated, say the sisters."What do you say to people who are donating to pay your bills, who have never met you and live halfway around the world? The Rick Springfield fans are truly one of a kind," Kriste says."When there is a cause, there is a way and a will, and those fans do everything in their power to see that something good comes out of a terrible situation."It is here that Kriste mentions how proud she is of the fans for the work they did to contribute to the family of Sahara Aldridge, 13, who passed away last November after courageously battling a brain-stem tumor for 17 months. This year, Milwaukee organizers are putting some of the funds raised toward Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship in Southeast Missouri — an organization that helped bring Sahara joy during her illness.Amy Aldridge, Sahara’s mom, says that Sahara would have been rooting for Karen and would be in total support of Rick’s fans helping her out."She so fully understood what it means to help others when they need a helping hand," Amy says."The fundraisers held for Sahara literally changed our lives. They enabled us to give her the very best care possible. They allowed us to try an alternative treatment that ultimately gave us nine more months with her. They helped us keep her in physical therapy longer than insurance allowed, they provided her with an accessible bathroom, and they literally kept our family above water."The financial toll cancer takes on lives, Amy adds, just adds to the heavy impact it already exacts on health and family life. The Aldridge family had many people championing Sahara during her fight. From people living in the family’s town of Cape Girardeau, MO to Rick’s fans to Rick Springfield himself, the support helped the family during some of the darkest days any parent can imagine."We were very blessed to have so many people in our corner, especially Rick. Without his help and support, which led to the support from so many across the country and the globe, I truly can’t imagine how much different our experience with Sahara would have been. I thank God for these blessings," Amy says.Amy and Shannon, Sahara’s dad, are now dedicated to helping others as much as possible and strongly encourage people to contribute to help Karen."I hope that the Milwaukee attendees take advantage of the opportunity to help Karen, not because she has asked for anything — she is way too proud to do that — but because it is the right thing to do," Amy says."We can’t cure someone with a donation, but we can help out with the everyday challenges that a family will face. Nothing feels better than knowing you have helped to ease the burden of someone else. It may sound trite, but there really is a ‘Circle of Life.’ Give when you can, and then when you need it, it will be given back to you."The majority of the funds raised in Milwaukee will go toward Karen Pearson to help offset the expenses incurred from battling cancer for nearly three years.Rick Springfield has donated one of his favorite concert-worn shirts as a prize for the fundraising raffle.Karen says that she feels somehow that everything is connected, with the underlying theme of horses and other animals — she loves them, Sahara loved them, and Springfield is well known for his love of animals.Karen is deeply grateful for being chosen as a recipient of the fan fund raising efforts, and is touched by the goodwill of Rick’s fans."I am totally overwhelmed by it. I am even feeling funny about this interview. I don’t like to be the center of attention. But I like to tell my story, to say ‘You can do it. You can fight it,’" Karen says. The donations from the first fundraiser in 2006 so affected Karen that she tried to write back everybody that donated when checks arrived in the mail."I can’t even describe what that meant to me. I am just a little stranger in this world, and they totally did that for me. They don’t know me, and I don’t know them," she says. She was thrilled that she did finally get to meet a few of her "angels" at a Rick Springfield concert in Fort Worth in February. And she got another magic moment with Rick again, who recognized her and gave her a big hug."It was wonderful. I felt closer to him. It’s like I’ve grown up with his music," Karen says. For her part, Kriste says she has learned a lot from Rick Springfield’s fans and has gained a new perspective on life."I now pay it forward whenever possible. I always have a good day, and I am thankful for every passing second. It is so easy to get caught up in the rumors, the gossip, the small talk about other people, until you sit back and try to realize that it is just not worth it anymore. There is no sense in getting worked up over the little things. You know, I truly believe that."Tiger by the TailDespite Karen’s fears that everything would come apart if she were not able to "do it all," her husband Barry has faced up to the task. He now works two jobs and looks after Karen’s horses."He has been wonderful. I always felt I was the one that needed to do everything — it was part of my problem. But he stepped right up to the plate. He and Diane were crying in my room when (doctors) said what all I had wrong with me. I felt bad for them, and said ‘You guys don’t cry.’ I felt bad for them crying for me," Karen says.Karen’s illness has brought out the angels in force — and she is filled with gratitude for the good karma people have bestowed upon her.Other angels around her include the man who owns the stable where she boards her horses, who has stopped charging for the service.Several Rick fan friends of Kriste’s who sell craft items regularly send Karen a portion of the proceeds.Canadian author Kathleen Mendelin, whose recently released book Vamplitude (www.vamplitude.com) was inspired in part by Rick Springfield and his album Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance, is also donating a portion of book sales to Karen Pearson. And when Karen couldn’t afford to board all three horses, her friend Diane kept the aging Boo — Karen’s very first horse — at her pasture until he passed away of a heart attack at age 28.Even Barry’s brother, a roofer, gifted them with a new roof to replace their leaky old one.Insurance covers a portion of the medical bills, but not everything Karen says. For example, Kriste adds, the co-pay to the oncologist is $30 a visit, and during her own illness she would have to visit several times a week. She also had an anti-nausea pill that cost $75 per pill, $32 of which was not covered. Scans and other tests are only covered partially by insurance.Taxes have put Karen and Barry even further behind, and a 2006 emergency shoulder surgery and a CAT scan for Barry have also set them back financially."I always think there are people so much far worse off than we are. I don’t like to complain. I am thankful for what we have," Karen says.Religion of the HeartWhen her scans come back "pretty good," Karen has not given up asking her doctor whether she is in remission. She believes in miracles, after all."He just shakes his head and says no, you are not in remission. I will probably not be in remission because the breast cancer has set up shop in the bones."And so Karen is thankful to still be here, wowing even her doctor with her survival and strong will to live."I am coming up to my three-year anniversary (of being diagnosed) in August, and my doctor just gets a grin on his face. I have excelled a little bit, and I think attitude has a lot to do with it. He tells me I am his star pupil. I guess I came further than he thought I would."If We Help One AnotherEven if you’re not hitting the road for FreakFest this year, you can still help in a number of ways.Fundraising organizers Teresa Chyzie of Ontario, and Linda McGary of North Carolina have put together a Breakfast Bash in Milwaukee during the week of the concerts. It takes place Saturday, May 10th, from 9 a.m. till noon, at the Ramada City Center and will include a raffle for a number of Rick-related merchandise and other prizes donated by fans. Some of the merchandise has been signed by Rick.Tickets cost $26 apiece and you don’t even need to plan to attend to purchase a ticket. You’ll feel almost as full and satisfied even if you pass on the pancakes, by donating to a good cause. But they do hope to see you there.Tickets for the Breakfast Bash can be purchased via Paypal using the e-mail address rsfanforever@rogers.com. Please put Breakfast Bash in the subject line when submitting your payment.Tickets for the online raffle for Rick’s concert-worn shirt are being handled by Virginia resident Lynne Sims and can be purchased via Paypal using the e-mail address karma1@comcast.net. Raffle tickets are $25 apiece or 3 for $60. Please put SHIRT in the subject line when submitting your payment. Please do not use the word “raffle.”For those wishing simply to donate any amount of money to help the MVTH and Karen Pearson, donate via Paypal using the e-mail address rsfanforever@rogers.com, and put HOPE in the subject line. Please do not use the word “donation.”Teresa, who is organizing the Milwaukee fundraiser for the fifth year in a row, says that the amount of support the fan fundraisers have increasingly garnered from Rick’s management is much appreciated.“He’s usually really good with us every year. He has even spent time autographing piles of items backstage to help us out in the past,” she says.“The fans that come out to Milwaukee feel like family. They come from all over the world — Germany, England, Scotland... it’s so much fun.”The response to this year’s fundraiser has been low, Teresa admits, but they hope to rally a good measure of support in the next month prior to the kickoff of the FreakFest. Rick Springfield’s concerts are slated nightly at Potowatami Casino from May 6th to the 10th.Helping publicize the fundraiser along with organizing fan activities during the week is Milwaukee resident Carey Bartosch, herself a breast cancer survivor of 16 years.“Many of us can’t work on a grand scale of saving everyone with cancer, but I can help one, especially one who is a fan in Rick,” Carey says.“I’m married, have four kids, work hard for my money and have little to spare — but what better place to put it?”For information on Rick Springfield’s Milwaukee and other tour dates, go to http://www.rickspringfield.com/.The writer of this article encourages anybody that wants to run it on a website, blog or group to please help spread the word. 98 and counting...LOL

Okay, so I finally got that pesky link fixed for my new blog. It only took a week. I'd check, it would look good, it would not work. Helps to have ".com" at the end! Oh, boy. Anyway, the link is up now so if you have any suggestions for that blog, let me know.

I also see that Becky updated Zach's blog with a whole bunch of information, so check that one out as well.

Not sure what else to throw out right now. Kinda feeling crazy with it being the end of the semester, Lyric having practices for 2 plays this week and Baby just counting down til summer. I have 2 papers due for my class, plus another test and the final in the next 3 weeks.

Oh, and we still don't have tickets to see Rick Springfield in May. We know it's going to work out, but when, I ask, When? When will we get the tickets we want?? (Actually never, because we want front row and that ain't happenin', but we're open to ANYTHING ON THE FLOOR! ) So, we keep checking.

this makes 97

Posts that is. I'm planning something fun for 100, which should be this week. Nothing new and exciting going on really. Lyric has a performance this week (actually 2) and then we are done with the school musical. But the local one isn't until June, so we'll still be running her around 4 x week. Baby is going to be starting dance. She didn't get into either academy that she auditioned for and I think it was as hard for us to tell her as it was for her to hear it. She cried and cried, little bitty sobs. Oh, it was awful. But it's going to be okay, she does not have to do everything that Lyric does. She WANTS to, but she doesn't need to. So we are going to focus on dance and sports (soccer or volleyball) and let her be her own person. That's all we want of our kids anyway, right?

pocket mod

This is one of the coolest things I've seen lately. Thank you very much, Family Fun Magazine. Check this out. If you are a list maker (like me) or an organizer carrier (like me) or a very busy lady (like me) you can print one sheet of paper to help you stay on track/keep track/feel less mental.
The link is : http://www.pocketmod.com/

You can personalize your mini organizer and then carry it with you so you don't forget/miss anything. And it fits in a pocket. Any pocket. Gotta love it.

Busy, Busier, Busiest

Because apparently I don't feel that I have enough on my plate, I've added a blog. You can click the link to the right. Making Money Your Way has been a book idea of mine for a long time. I finally decided that it might just be easier to blog it. Let me know what you think!

Month of Posts- April- letters

Note to self- never be afraid to try new things. Make sure that your friends and family know how much you love them. Don't be afraid to reach for your dreams. It can't hurt anything to try. You can do anything! Love, Me

Rock of Love

I have decided that Rock of Love really is a guilty pleasure. I love watching it. I love seeing what craziness the girls will come up with. I love to see people who really think that they can fall in love by MASS DATING! But then, the mom in me kicks in. Bret Michaels (who I love!) has two daughters. So what I want to know is 1) what are they going to think in a few years (okay 20?!) when they see how daddy and their step mom got together and 2) what would he say if those were his daughters on a show like that shaking their stuff and hanging all over some guy, on TV, for the whole world to see. Come on Bret, really. Did you think of the long term effects before you signed on?? At least Scott Baio just looks stupid (but he really grew up when he became a father).

I figured out the spin for Rock of Love 3 (you know it's going to happen). I think they should bring back Bret's favorite 2 from seasons 1 and 2, and also put a "mole" in the house. She's to go to girl. Nobody will know that she is the mole, but she'll be there getting the goods and reporting back to Bret. Sort of like Heather has been doing the past couple of weeks. So at the final episode, it will be the mole and the real winner. Come on VH1, what do you think?

Once a Slacker....

I wanted to do this daily thing, but it doesn't always work that way. I have a couple of good post ideas so check back later!

A month of posts....

I'm not a great bloggerator...I'm not even good. I logged in and was mad that my last blog wasn't here. Of course it's not here, it's over at nablopomo. DUH! anyway, my list for today is ..huh, I got nothing. I can't think of a list of anything right now. My brain is on autopilot and apparently the autopilot is not working very well.

So, I'll try to think of a good list to post tonight or tomorrow, or the next day.....or any other days in March for that matter. I'm going to also have to figure out where I'm going to blog consistently.

Oh, oh, list, list. I just thought of a list.

Blogs I check daily (Without links)
Lynn's Life
Paula's Place
Amy's blog
Grey's Anatomy Insider
Rick Springfield and US (okay, not everyday, but I do get updates as they happen so that counts right??)

So, there you go. There's my list for today. I think I'm 2 for 6. I guess I better step it up.

I'm a Blabbermouth

Some might think that is a bad thing, but since it helped me win a contest over at www.barbaradelinksy.com , it's a title that I will wear with honor. I told some friends about the contest and Ms. Delinksy's new book, and I'm the winner! I will recieve a signed copy of the new book, a copy of the cover....and a phone call! That is awesome! I can't think of what I would say, but I guess I'll just be honest. She is an inspiration to me having published her first book in her 30's. Besides that she writes great stories with meaning and feeling and realistic characters. I feel I learn something from each book, and I hope that I am able to convey that in a quick phone conversation. I'll post again after the actual conversation. I hope I don't blubber like an idiot.

What's coming....

I've got a couple of things in line for this blog and a fun idea for the summer (but right now that's a secret). Lyric is doing an 80's themed performance this spring. They are practicing the dance to Michael Jackson's Thriller. She had me draw her some 80's outfits last night. (Draw being a relative term because Art was never my best sugject). She's thinking long sweater, leggings, bangles. It will be fun to help her pull that outfit together. I also pulled out my 80's lyric trivia book (looking for pix) and found some funny, funny stuff. So, once a week or so, I'm going to post some 80's lyric trivia. Check back and you can play along.

The summer project is going to be a compilation thing. I can't give out too many details right now, but I can say that it is going to be fun. I'll get to work with Ally, do something fun and ...well, maybe there is no and. Anyway, keep checking back for info on that this spring.

Vamplitude- buy it today

Here's a quick snyposis of a new book that is available for all to devour. If you like what you read, click on the link below and order a copy. This book is written by an e-friend of mine, and I'm all about helping her promote it!

A strange blanket of uncertainty falls over Exeter. The weather becomes unpredictable.
Strangers invade the town. Psychological chaos ensues.
There is a fork at the end of every road with no path being the clear option to crawl down.
The beautiful town turns black as darkness sets in to reinvent the future.

Kristoph is a talented Rock Star.

He has seen the world unfold, witnessing the greatest of miracles as well as the bowels of misery.
On the surface his fame and power cannot break his emotional barrier, void of passion, void of acceptance, and void of purpose.
He is grand in stature yet his handsome, youthful appearance is a symptom, and a reminder of the man he longs to be.
He is not alone in what ails him, but unknowingly, he is the catalyst to his own recovery.

Sarah is as beautiful as the small town she lives in. The loss of her mother during her childhood haunts her.
Between the silent fits of rage she feels for her father, she can only dream of knowing what it would have
been like to have him guide her into adulthood. Abandoned, naive, and gentle she gets
through her sheltered life with the help of her best friend Peter, and her legal guardian Carmilla.

Peter, the Priest is as devoted to Sarah as any Priest should be to their chosen path.
He has comforted Sarah since her cruel childhood, but is unable to do the same for himself.

Snow, snow and more snow

These pix are actually from the last snow dump! (New Years Day??) I'll have to take some new ones, but I thought you might like to see these. That's Baby peaking out and Fisher standing up in side. This was in our front yard for a couple of days before it melted. We might get to do another one with all the new snow fall.

Updating the blog

I haven't done a lot of fancy stuff, but I totally dig that music player on the side! Thanks to Amy SP! She has one on her blog, and I went to the site and now, I have one two. It's editable, changeable, and only has songs on it that I like. However diverse they are. Now I have to see if I can actually pull a list off my Ipod and put that there. That would be awesome! I'll let you know, or you'll see it.

Another Year Older...or is it Another Year Better

or maybe a better year?? Hmm. Food for thought I guess. I have had a birthday since last time I posted. It really doesn't feel any different. I think one year makes such a small difference. It's when I look back 5 years or 10 years that I see changes. 5 years ago, I didn't have a teenager, Baby was, well, still a baby, and I was still working in social services.

This year is gearing up to be a good one. Rick Springfield's annual party in Milwaukee has been confirmed for May 6-10. My friend, K, thinks that we should do 2 shows this year, and we're trying to figure out how to pull that off. (How can I earn some extra money QUICK??) Also, it's mother's day weekend, and let's face it- we deserve it.

Fisher and I haven't planned our family vacation yet. We might just end up with a long weekend somewhere, or we have done a traveling vacation: a couple days here, a couple days there. We'll have to see what we can come up with. And soon.

Happy New Year

Well, this is it. The last day of 2007. This has been a weird and wonderful, crazy year. Lyric turned 13 so now I am a parent of a teenager. Which doesn't hardly seem possible, because I often feel like a teenager myself. I was blessed with the fortune of finding my biological father. Although, I'm not sure where that relationship is going, or the one I might have with my siblings (Hey, WR!) it was nice to finally put the final piece in my biology puzzle. I've made some friends, become closer to some and really just had fun.

I don't believe in Resolutions, because then there is a higher expectation, and it seems most resolutions are harder to keep. I make ongoing goals. I have a list of things to do in my lifetime. This list gets updated periodically. Some of the things on it are: See Lyric graduate from high school, see Baby graduate, attend Lyric's wedding, celebrate our 50th Anniversary (with Fisher of course). And then there are things for me: meet Barbara Delinsky and Rick Springfield, learn calligraphy, publish a novel (so much closer to getting this done), and travel to Australia.

One of my goals for 2008 is to be less of a complainer and more of a doer. If there is something that I can't fix/change, then I chose to accept it and not complain. That's one. Two is to be happy. That's pretty vague, but I like it that way because different things make me happy at different times. So here's to a Rockin', Happy, Somewhat uneventful 2008!

Christmas with you video

Reunions

Yesterday's news included a wonderful story about a mother and son reunited...at work. Here's one of the links below:
http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_17851.aspx

This is such a wonderful story, especially at the holidays. I know that there are many others out there looking for biological parents. These little stories often show up and they are always excited and heartwarming.

The ones we don't usually hear about are the ones that don't have a happy ending. The ones where the birth mom never told her "new" family that she had another child, or the ones where the birth father isn't interested in a relationship, or maybe just outright denies the child. But they are out there. It's life. People get caught up in their day to day lives and push the past deep into the closet.

For those out there that have had happy reunions, I applaud you and send you a big cyber hug. For those that can't find the missing person, or don't have a happy outcome- you get an even bigger hug. Sometimes those can be more emotional than the "new beginning" stories.

At this season of giving and caring, make sure that you take time to tell your family you love them, give them an extra hug and enjoy them. Don't forget, Jesus died for you. Love don't get any bigger than that.

Happy Holidays...

The holiday season is bearing down on us...everybody is rushing to buy presents and send Christmas cards. People are rushing to the mall, the local WalMart or to the closest computer. Spending is up, even at a time when disposable income is down. I know people who buy everything their kids want so they can have a good Christmas. Tha's great, but when they get everything that they want at Christmas, they expect that to happen all year long. I know other people who only buy their kids 3 gifts...Baby Jesus received three gifts and so do they. Fisher and I fall somewhere in the middle. We try to get the kids things that they want, without being too crazy...and three gifts under the just doesn't seem enough.

If you are looking to do something wonderful and meaning full and have a few extra dollars to give, check out the link below.

I love Bon Jovi....

and not in the 14 year old girl "someday I want to marry him" way, or not in the "he's so wonderful" way...but in the Jon Bon Jovi is a wonderful man, doing good things, who is down to earth and REAL. Not only has he been able to keep his wife and kids out of the limelight for like 20 years, he keeps working hard, cranking out good tunes, working with the same guys all that time, and in his "off" time, he does things like help with Habitat for Humanity (did you see that video Jon and the boys did with Jennifer Nettles??) and now he is involved with Project HOME. (Actually, I think that he founded it). I saw a little interview on Fox News this morning with a family that received their home this way. Jon Bon Jovi was at their house (can you say- WOW) and the little girl who was like 9 said that she didn't know that he was a rock star. He was just "a normal human"...how darling is that?? So, I love Bon Jovi- the band, the music, the man and the whole dang thing.

It's happening already....

Baby now has magazine posters on her wall. (Tiger Beat to be exact) One wall, three posters (zac Efron, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers). I remember when I was in 7th and 8th grade and started putting posters up. Rick Springfield, John Stamos, Paul King, any cute boy that was in one of those magazines. Now, a "few" years later, the only ones that have still survived are the Rick Springfield ones. (and I'm sure that some of these were Tiger Beat- now I have to check!) But let me just say, Baby is 8....is that too young for magazine posters? And when she told me that she was talking to the posters while she was playing in her room, I knew that she was destined to be just like me. before you know it, that poster of Zac Efron will be hung on the wall to match his actual height and she will be standing in front of it to see how their heights compare.

Lyric has has posters on her walls for a couple of years, mostly Daniel Radcliffe...she is a huge Harry Potter fan...There are a few other ones up there as well, but mostly those.

And I can't really say anything, because Fisher is the one who bought the mag for Baby. He actually went back to the store later to get same magazine for Lyric. Now, there is something wrong with that. they are 4 years apart. Aren't they supposed to like different things? Or am I way off base? Any thoughts?

NaNoWriMo...and more...and more

Wow, this writing thing is crazy. I've actually been disciplined enough to write 6 out of the past 7 days. Go me! I'm trying to stay on task for my total word count of 50,000, but I'm hand writing so it's hard to say if I am or not. Mostly what I've done is written a page, counted the actual words on that page, and then guestimated for the rest of the pages in that notebook. So, I could be over or under my word count and not know it. I'm hoping to transfer everything over to computer over the next week or so, so I really know what my word count is. And if I hit 50,000, I want that certificate darn it!

So, I'm off to continue writing...and writing...and writing....wish me luck.

The biggest leaf ever...

I will post a photo later, but you will not believe it. I was walking across the yard this morning and found the biggest leaf I have ever seen. I took a pix of Baby holding it, but I don't have my cord with me, so I can't upload it right now. It's bigger than my head! wait til you see it.

Night two of Basketball...

Lyric is trying to be an all around student. The play finished Friday night and Saturday morning she was off to basketball tryouts. Tonight is night two. At the end of the night, she will get an envelope. Inside it will either say- "Thanks for trying out, sharpen your skills and try again next year" or it will say - "See you tomorrow". IF you get a see you tomorrow envelope, that means one more night of try outs. Then on Wednesday the team will be posted. The 8th grade team will actually be posted tomorrow. And then tomorrow night is just for the 7th graders. I'm a bit worried for her. But, she seems to be okay with whatever the turn out will be.

So, to that end, I hope she's channelling her dad's energy and maybe Sahara could just give her a little boost!

It's the end of the weekend....

I missed my blog entry yesterday and I'm a lot of words behind in NaNoWriMo, but I have two happy healthy children so there's the trade off. Sahara's Celebration of Life (www.saharaaldridge.com) was yesterday. Pamela is going to give us an update on the blog tomorrow and I've been working on pages for the memory book. I feel like I want them to be perfect for Amy and Shannon. Even though I don't know them, and won't meet them, I hope that they know that the pages were put together for them. I'm trying to picture how I would feel if somebody was doing that for me. What I would think of when I looked at those pages if the words in them were for my daughter. I hope that it will help them with their grief process. I can't say healing process because I don't think they can heal from this. They can only go forward from here. I know that they are different people than they were a week ago, and that's just how it is.

Getting one in....

I only have a few minutes before Friday is over and I wanted to get in my daily blog. Lyric was in a play yesterday and today at school. It went well, but there were a few mic problems. I took Lyric and 3 of her friends to Dairy Queen ( affectionately known as DQ) and they caused trouble for about an hour. It sure did seem longer, and it wasn't just "my" kids. There were several from the school, and really, really, they weren't bad. Lyric and her friends are looking at pictures and videos from her camera on the TV screen and they are having a ball. Baby is over at a friend's house for the night. Her friend's mom is our babysitter and one of Lyric's friends that is spending the night is the babysitter's daughter. So basically we did a kid switch. Tomorrow starts bball practice. I hope she gets on the team.

how many words...

how many words can you write in an hour?? You would probably be amazed. I wrote 1188 words in less than an hour. That makes this NaNoWriMo thing seem like a piece of cake. In a little over an hour, I should be hitting my goal for each day. Now, writing for 1 1/2 to 2 hours each day should make me totally be able to hit the goal for the month, right?? RIGHT! It's actually harder right now to blog everyday than it is to hit the goal....go figure. Anyway, peace love and happiness to you and yours.

Hug the ones you love and don't forger to tell them how much they mean to you.

Healing broken hearts....

Sahara's support continues, although it has been transferred to her parents, family, friends. Sahara is playing basketball in Heaven and there is no doubt that she is hitting all the 3 pointers! How do you heal a broken heart?? I don't know if you can. I think time lessens the pain, but the extrodinary loss is always fell. It's hard to see the good in things like this. It's not for the best- the best would have been for her to not have to be sick at all. She's not in a better place- because what better place is there than her mom's arms. I am a believer in God. I believe that God has a plan for each and everyone of us. He had a plan for Sahara and now he needs her in Heaven. There is no doubt in my mind that Amy and Shannon will use their grief to do something wonderful in her honor. No doubt at all.

God has a plan....

I keep telling myself that, even when it doesn't make sense. Sahara Aldridge passed away last night, and I can only imagine what her parents must be going through. Her blog link in over there on the right. Click on it. You can read her story, and post a comment if you wish.

She was a little girl with a big presence, and she made an impact on many more lives than she knew (or than her parents knew). I want to thank Amy and Shannon for sharing their lives and Sahara's story with the world. We are still here for you. Do you feel the collective hug of all of us wrapping our arms around you?? We are.

I'd tell you to be strong, but you already are, so I can only pray for peace for you both.

There's also a note from Rick Springfield on his website. That link is over there to the right as well.

A day behind....

I'm only a day behind for NaNoWriMo and NaBloPoMo...go figure. I'm at almost 5000 words as of last night....so if I write a few hundred words extra for the next few days, I'll be back on track. This novel that I am working on is not what I started with, but so far I'm liking where it is going and I have an idea for a twist here and there. Wouldn't it be funny if this turned out to be better than the Derek and Abbi story?? I promise, Derek and Abbi's story will get done. It will, really! Actually, it is mostly done. What I need is the time to type it, but that won't be happening in November, now will it!

How to make a tortise shell...

otherwise known as "I opened my big mouth again". LOL. Lyric is Mrs. Tortise in the fall play. As of last week, they weren't sure what her costume was going to be. So I got this idea, Lyric ran it by her teacher and he said "Sure" as long as he didn't have to do anything. So, today we head out to the store to get the stuff I think we need. I had a great idea, we'll see if it comes to light. SO for I have the front and the back pieces made, but I have to put it all together and see if it really looks okay. Then we have to take it to the teacher for approval. So I ask you this- How would you turn your daughter into a turtle/tortise?

Lots of good stuff....

1) I was checking Lynn's blog the other day, and then clicked "next blog" at the top of the page. I was surprised and thrilled to find http://www.mamarazzi.org/. Cute, funny, cheeky. Check it out.
2) another of the blogs that I happened upon (and I'm sorry that I can't remember which one) but it was written by a mom. She had code names for those in her family. I loved that idea. I try really hard not to put names in, but oldest and little one are kind of lame. So from here forward: hubby will be known as Fisher, Oldest will be known as Lyric and youngest will be known as Baby.
3) NanoWriMo is into day two, as is Nablopomo (is that right?) Anyway, one is for writing every day and one is for blog posting every day. (For the month of November anyway.) So far, I'm doing great at the blog thing, not so good at the writing thing, but I have high hopes that I will complete the challenge this year (even if the writing doesn't make a lick of sense, which, at this point, seems highly likely).

NaNoWriMo...or less

Today is the first day of NaNoWriMo 2007...the goal- 50,000 words written by the end of the month, no editing, no going back, just writing. This works out to be 1667 words per day. Think I can do it?? I'm sure that I probably do write that many words in a day, but they don't all count. :-) So wish me luck on my journey, as I try my best to complete this goal. Feel free to bug me about how it's going, how many words I've written and it any of it makes sense.

New Stuff....

I have a new article at Associated Content- "How to be an Organized Girl Scout Leader". check it out. I'm also working on another one "Rick Vs Bruce- how to tell the difference". If it doesn't get accepted at AC, then it will just be posted here as a blog entry, I think. I'm not sure if I'll submitted it to Helium or one of those other writing websites. I will for sure let you know when/where you can read it.

I'm looking forward to the weekend. It's been a long week. Finally got rid of the week long headache (thank goodness) but now I have a weird shoulder thing going on. I think I pulled a muscle or 5, and it's making it pretty difficult to move in the middle of the night. I'm taking Advil and using heat pads, so hopefully everything will loosen up and go back into place.

I'm going to Granite City with the girls from work tonight. None of us have ever been there, so it will be a fun experience!

C'ya,
Aim

Dis'd on the radio...

(Do people still say dis'd??)

Okay, so it wasn't me that was dis'd, but the one and only---Rick Springfield. This morning, hubby had on the radio while in the shower, I went in to help the youngest finish getting ready (does nobody understand the concept of punching a time clock except me???) and Man Cow was on the radio. He was playing a snippet of "people are people" (I can't remember who it's by, but you know the song- "people are people so why it should it be that you and I can't get along- or something like that)....anyway, then Man Cow says "Worst lyrics ever written, except for the Rick Springfield" and then they play a snippet of "Jessie's Girl". Hubby and I both laugh but for different reasons. Hubby enjoys any cut downs of the Rickster...I enjoyed the fact that he was mentioned on the radio AT ALL, and if you know anything about me, you know that Jessie's Girl is my LEAST FAVORITE SONG of all time. (Sorry, Rick) It's not a bad song, it's just not his best song. Unfortunately, Jessie's Girl and Rick Springfield go hand in hand, unless you have followed his career at all. Then, into the car, on the way to the babysitter's. "mom, play Jessie's Girl," say the youngest daughter. "I'm not even sure I have Jessie's Girl on my ipod," I say. I hear the collective gasp of my fellow Rick fans right now, but it's true, I wasn't sure. I checked, and yes I do, Both versions (Ricks and Frickin' A's) So I let the little one listen to JG for the 2 minutes it takes to get to the sitter's house. Am I a super cool mom or what?!?!?!?

Then I get to work and one of my co workers says, "Amy. Rick Springfield. November 17. St Charles. I've been meaning to tell you. Are you going?" (See some people are looking out for me! ) But I am not going. Too much other stuff going on right now. Can't do it.

But I am anxiously awaiting the new Christmas CD- "Christmas with you". I preordered from CD Universe.(www.cduiniverse.com) CD and Shipping for under $11. I know that if you order it from Rick's Merchandise (www.ricksmerch.com) you can get it right away, as they started shipping on Oct 15. I was willing to wait and pay a little less. It's mostly covers, with one "remix" and one new song "Christmas with you" which can be heard (a part of it anyway) at www.rickspringfield.com. Check it out!

Enchanted Potions...gifts and more

Who's ready for Christmas?? You do know that it is less than 3 months away, right?? I recent signed up as an affiliate with Enchanted Potions. I've been watching their website for years, and I was previously signed up as an affiliate, but I didn't have a good website to go with it. Well, anywhere, here's the deal. I can get 30% off anything I order (They have some great products over there that I'm sure I won't want to share), I can do parties, or if somebody else is interested, I can make a team. There's really no pressure. Well, there's one thing. You have to place an order (any size) once every quarter. Nice, huh?!? The friendly people who starte this company, are awesome! I'm looking forward to making "body baskets" for my girls and maybe buying some extras to have on hand for those last minute birthday gifts.

Don't You Hate It....

when you come in on the end of a joke? Or when you know the answer to the question, but didn't hear the question in the first place?? Today, I was listening to the radio. What I hear is "Amy, what's the answer?" and then AMY says "Love Somebody by Rick Springfield". Now, had I been paying attention 5 minutes earlier, that Amy could have been me. How do I miss these things??? I don't even know what the prize was, but I don't think AMY deserved it because when the DJ's asked if she had seen Rick's Coronado concert video she said "No." Not only had she not seen it, she didn't even know about it. Hello, woman, are you not calling from ROCKFORD?? Oh, the little things that make me crazy!

Hey, all....TV shows and More

DId you see Rock of Love?!? Did you see crazy Lacey finally go home. I thought that Brett was pretty smart in his thinking that if she was hiding things from her parents, she was probably going to hide things from him as well. When she was "throwing heather under the bus", I'm glad that Heather overheard and that she confronted her on it. Poor Brett, When Lacey's dad asked about their "relations" I thought he was going to throw up! Funny TV though. So, now we are down to Jes and Heather. I really, really want Jess to win. I think the last episode is going to be crazy! And I heard that they filmed a reunion with Brett and all the girls, so that should be on in a week or so.

Next week starts ABC's fall lineup. Can't wait for my Grey's Anatomy. That's the only show I'm really looking forward to right now. We'll have to see what else shows up. I found out last week that Crossing Jordan got cancelled. Not Happy!

and last but not least, I finally figured out how to add things to my cafepress store, so if you feel the need, desire, curiosity, head on over to: www.cafepress.com/kruegerstore

Let me know what you think!

the anniversary of 9/11..AKA Happy Marni Day

Several people lost their lives on 9/11/01, one of them being Marni, who was a huge Rick Springfield fan. I never actually met Marni, but I have read several of her posts that have been archived on the net. She was a very fun, happy, loving spirit. I know that there were others out there just like her. SO, today, on 9/11/07, please don't forget to take a moment to remember all of those that lost their lives, and their families who I'm sure are still grieving as they try to go on.

What a wild ride...

I hope. I've started a blog for the two main characters in my book. I spend some time working on the book this weekend, and then decided that this would be a fun way to share their story. the blogs are:
www.derekalexander.blogspot.com

www.abbihamilton.blogspot.com

check them out, and follow the story. We'll see how it goes. Maybe when the story comes from them, it will change, I don't know.

ramblings, musings and more

So, I got caught up on "Rock of Love" yesterday. Caught up!?!? I hadn't really missed much. I know this. 1) Bret's "Superfans" had great ideas, Bret just didn't listen, 2) Lacey is a nutjob, 3)Sam is better off without Bret (Even though they might stay friends), and 4) all these girls should tell Bret bye bye, because nothing long term is going to come out of it. DUH!

Daughtry---I'm re-newly obsessed with this CD. Loving it, loving it. I can't wait for some new music. I'm thinking about ordering Absent Element's CD. If you have it, let me know what you think.

Scott Baio is 45 and still single. I thought that he and Renee were going to get married. After doing some internet sleuthing the other day, it seems as they are together, expecting a child and still not married....Hmmmmm

Who Killed Rock N Roll?!?!? If you haven't already heard this song by Rick Springfield, hope on over to Itunes and check it out. Who do you think killed Rock N Roll.

I inadvertently stumbled across a blog today, written by a person/author that I know several people were trying to get in contact with because she wrote a book, they bought it, and she never delivered. If you want more info, it's going to have to be private. Email me.

Rockin' with Daughtry

Yes, Daughtry. Last night I had the priviledge of heading to downtown Rockford for opening night of On The Waterfront (with their own opening act of 12 Stones, who also ROCKED!) I have three things to say: Loud, short, AWESOME! It was a very good show. Chris and the boys rocked the house. I'm still kicking myself for not buying the Daughtry hoodie, but I think that I can get one online, so Merry Christmas to ME! The set list is below. If you get a chance to see Daughtry live, I highly recommend it. Great show.

Set List:
Crashed
What I Want
Used To
Gone
It's Not Over
Breakdown
What About Now
Black(Pearl Jam cover)
Feels Like Tonight
Over You
Home Sweet Home (Motley Crue cover-just the first few lines)

Happy Birthday, Rick Springfield

Today, is Rick Springfield's 58th birthday. 58, people! Have you seen this man?? Who would believe it. This picture was taken this summer, by my daughter. (She is totally grossed out by the fact that he took his shirt off.) Anyway, Happy Birthday, Mr Springfield. thanks for the many years of music and entertainment....Here's to a few more!

The High School Musical Phenomenon

No, I'm not talking about all those artsy fartsy types who love to sing and dance. I'm talking about the Disney channel mega hit(s)- High School Musical and High School Musical 2. If you have a child anywhere from 8-15 (and maybe even older or younger) then you must know about this. HSM 2 debuted last weekend with the highest viewer ever for a cable movie. 17 MILLION people. What is it that makes the kids want to watch? Are there subliminal messages? Is it because Chad or Troy are so cute? Is it because they want to be like Sharpay or Gabriella? Is it because they are in a hurry to grow up?

I think it is because: the girls are cute, the boys are cuter, there is dancing, and singing (and a kiss or three). My kids have not stopped listening to the CD since Saturday when I gave them both a copy. Okay, that's a little fib. They stop long enough to re watch the movie everyday. Since we got an extended summer break due to a teacher's strike, they have already seen it three times this week. I draw the line at once a day. No more viewings than that.

Most of the kids I know are already taking about HSM 3! What are your thoughts on the HSM phenomenon??

vacation rocks!

Let me just say, that even though the road was long (10 hours) it was worth it....Leech Lake, MN was beautiful....we were out in the middle of nowhere, and it was pretty and quiet (for the most part), and the kids had a ball...except for the sore losers. You know, 15 year old boys can be competitive, but not as competitive as 30 something moms! LOL. Kelley and I won the first two rounds of Trivial Pursuit (pop culture and 80's)...The boys won the third round, and then we locked them out of the cabin....It was very funny. I'll try to get a couple of pix up here for you to see. You won't even belive it.

July 18, 1982---Dane County Coliseum--Madison, WI
Rick Springfield performs, and I was there. In the back, the way back. He was a super small spot on the stage, but man was that a good time. Fast forward, 25 years later, I have now seen Rick 15 times, including that first time. I still love the show, and always gladly share Rick's music with others. The last show that I went to, I took my two daughters.

I know that some day, there will be no more Rick Springfield concerts. Someday, but for now, I will continue to listen to the music, go to the shows, and share his catalog of music with all who will listen.

Dirty Martini Review

JA Konrath- Dirty Martini

I have been waiting for this book for a year. And it was worth the wait. I have read all of JA Konrath’s books, and honestly, I can’t remember how I started with him, but I’m glad that I did. They always leave me laughing, crying and wanting more. Definitely a fun ride, if you're willing to take the chance.

Dirty Martini is a continuation of the story of Lieutenant Jack Daniels, who is a tough cop, dealing with all the slime balls in Chicago. Oh, did I mention that Jack is a woman?! You go, girl! Jack’s boyfriend wants to get married, but she’s more of the once burned, twice shy school. Then she finds out something about her parentage that throws her for a loop. And at the same time, the Chemist is poisoning food all over Chicago. The guilt is multiplied when Latham gets sick at the hands of the Chemist, and is rushed to the hospital.

What will she do? Will she accept Latham’s proposal? Will she find out the truth about her parents? Will she save Chicago? I was unable to put this book down for little more than eating and potty breaks. I wanted to devour it, not literally. But...wait, there are no buts here. This is one of the best books I have read so far this year, and if you know anything at all about me, you know that is a lot! I love a good book that makes me think. I was trying to figure out who the Chemist was from the get go. And I must admit, I was wrong, but it was still worth reading. I'm already counting down for the next book, and I'm not even sure if it has been written yet....

Dirty Martini is a great story all by itself, but I recommend reading the series.
Whiskey Sour
Bloody Mary

Are two "Ricks" better than one?

This is a thought that I have been contemplating since watching General Hospital last night. (I watch on SoapNet at 9pm) I love Rick Springfield. I think it is very cool that after two decades they brought back Noah Drake. I love General Hospital. I'm sure that I have been watching this show on and off my whole life. I think Eli Love is hoot. He's so funny, quirky, and not bad too look at (for a guy with a brain anurysm). But are two Rick really better than one? I'm not sure.

I smiled when Eli appeared at the beginning of the show, and smiled a little wider when Noah appeared. Then I just giggled when Noah and Eli were in the same room. Was the storyline funny? No. Was there a wardrobe malfunction? Unfortunately, not. I was sitting there picturing Rick talking to an empty bed, or a stand in, and the whole concept of the storyline was lost. I got caught up in reality and couldn't buy Noah and Eli in the same room. Then I started to wonder if Rick was getting paid double for doing two characters. Food for thought.

I will continue to watch GH, because I love to see Rick getting some screen time, I think scrubs are awesome and I, for one, really want to see Jason and Elizabeth get together. I like Lucky, but I don't think he fits with Elizabeth anymore. It's too weird. That could be her fault, but regardless, I want to see Jason and Sam break up too. Sam is DEFINITELY not good enough for him. Or not right for him anyway.

When Noah fades back into the darkness, will I still watch? Yes. I will continue to follow the show, maybe not daily, but since it is SOOOO much better than Days right now, how can I turn away.

And, one last thought. Have these guys not ever, EVER thought of lip syncing?!? Patrick keeps saying how Noah can learn the songs, etc etc. Dude, all you gotta do is get up there and lip sync and pretend to play the guitar. Learn the songs, you don't have to actually sing them! I'm looking forward to Rick actually singing on the show, and I think this is a good way to make it happen, without compromising Rick as an artist or Noah as a doctor.

Turnabout is Fair play....

(this picture was taken by Hannah)
Last weekend, I had to joy of taking my two girls to a Rick Springfield concert. Their second, however, the younger one was too little last time to remember. If you know anything at all about me, you probably know that I have been a Rick Springfield fan since I was 12...yes, that's right, since I was 12. So, I was very much looking forward to experiencing the concert on 7/7/07. Not only with my girls, but with friends new and old. My friend, Melissa and her daughter went with (actually, Melissa drove) Anyway, it was good show, though hot and humid, but the kids seemed to have a good time. Rick was playful as always. And though I didn't get to hear my favorite song "Wasted", I did enjoy myself.

So why is it, do you think, that I haven't stopped listening to Nickelback since that night?! I have 110 Rick songs on my ipod and 19 Nickelback, guess what's getting the most airplay?! See, this is what happened. Melissa had 2 Nickelback CD's in her car. We listened to them all the way to the show and all the way home. Something about the music has SUCKED ME IN! I guess I should say, sucked me in farther. I have always liked Nickelback. When I would here one of their songs, I would sing along. But now, Nickelback is my music of choice. I'm so sorry, Rick, that you have been temporarily replaced....I don't think this has every happened before and it's all Melissa's fault.

I guess since I turned her on to Rick a few years ago, and now she looks forward to his shows as much as I do, turnabout is fair play. If Rick and Nickelback were both doing shows on the same day, I would be hard pressed to pick...So, I'm leaving the picking up to Melissa...:-)

Books, Books and Books

Just as a few weeks ago I had the SUPER MOVIE WEEKEND, now I have had the SUPER BOOK WEEKEND. Two of my favorite authors release new books. Janet Evanovich released "Lean Mean Thirteen" and "Hot Stuff" and JA Konrath released "Dirty Martini", plus I received the books that I ordered from www.Bookcloseouts.com. Let me just tell you, I had so many books to read, I wasn't sure where to start. I wanted the Janet books and the JA book to be for vacation, but that is like almost a month away. Yup, you guess it, I read "Lean Mean Thirteen" in a day...and I would do it again. Then I read "Hot Stuff", and started Dirty Martini and one of the book closeout books. Believe it or not, I did get some other stuff done that weekend as well.

Let me tell you about this book close out place. I bought 6 books, 2 of them hard cover, had them shipped to my house (delivered in less than a week) and it cost me less than $20. yes, you read right, LESS that $20 for 6 books, delivered. I think I'm in heaven.

Although, it will be hard to read and right at the same time. Derek and Abbi have come back to visit me and I really think that their story will get told this year. Keep your fingers crossed.
